The Network Administrator's Role

The role of Network Administrator has become one of
the most important technology management jobs in an
organization. A Network Administrator's primary responsibility is to implement, manage, and maintain
network and personal computer operations. These are
often newly created positions and, in many organizations, there is confusion or uncertainty about the Network Administrator's job description. Sometimes, this
uncertainty is compounded because the people filling
these roles have had little formal training in information systems management.
Every situation is different, however, we have found
the following are important components of a Network
Administrator's role:
- Manage and maintain network hardware and software.
- Manage network equipment purchasing and work
with vendors.
- Perform or supervise backups and maintenance of
off-site backup storage.
- Manage directories and anti-virus protections.
Train network users, answer questions, resolve
problems, and communicate changes in software
and operations.
- Participate in technology planning and budgeting.
- Develop support staff and ensure there are qualified backups in his or her absence.
- Pro-actively look for ways to better apply technology to the organization's primary mission.
The Network Administrator's job will vary with each
organization. Important considerations include the
role of technology in the organization, the number and
type of users supported, and the qualifications of the
individuals involved.
